To kick start my Thirsty City research I attended the two day conference of Water & Heritage for the future on november 27 & 28. Organised by ICOMOS, The second day was at the Waterlinie Museum at Fort Vechten. The Waterlinie, a national heritage landscape, is a unique large aquatic defences system consisting of forts, sluices and inundation area’s.
There were some very interesting presentations. I was especially fascinated by the presentation of Heleni Porfyriou (CONSIGLIO NAZIONALE DELLE RICERCHE
Istituto per la Conservazione e Valorizzazione dei Beni Culturali) She presented some results of the Watershapes research . In this research they looked at the architectural shapes of water utility systems. A study that will be of great use for my Thirsty Cities research.
